#8: Deep Work
What if I could work in a completely different way?
One of the personal transformations I “founded” recently is changing the way I work. I didn’t like that I was getting distracted so much. I felt like I am only rarely and randomly reaching deep focus. It felt horrible because I am wasting my time by not unlocking my potential. So I asked myself: “What if I could work in a completely different way?”
I say “a completely different way” because I want to transform my very attitude to different types of work and my principles around it. Cal Newport’s Deep Work is the best guide on how to do it. Feels like this book has been around and everyone knows of it. Yet, how many of us have been consistently “deep working” instead of being swamped by shallow work? How many of us have really developed a personal system and have accountably kept it up?
The book is just an inspiration towards the truly crucial step: a personal Deep Work Manifesto. The writing of a personal manifesto focuses your attention on perceiving what works best for you. The first step I took is deleting texting apps from my IPad. Once I remove the very ability to get to my dopamine burst, I am forced to train my discipline and get distracted less. Also, this week I will be going into a library for 3 hours of deep work every day to test out how that changes the value of work produced.
