#78: As Long As There is s Rule
there is no freedom
As long as there is a rule or a ban on X, there is no freedom from it. For when I tell myself “You are not allowed X”, the mind directs the entirety of its energy towards craving it. The mind has a way of eventually surfacing my greatest desires, and catching me in moments when I am too vulnerable to not give in to them. When X is given such disproportionate significance, the mind will eventually find a nifty way to trick the rule-maker.
So how do I free myself of X? By lessening its importance to me whatsoever. This way, I simply stop registering X as desirable, and my attention naturally drifts away toward other things. Telling my child “You cannot have that candy” is ineffective; the curious child will eventually rebel against the coercive rule. But what about engaging in a play that makes the child so immersed that there is no desire for X any longer.
