#49: Powerful Writing
Powerful writing crafts powerful thinking
Last week I helped someone write college essays, and I caught myself saying: “The way you say it makes all the difference.” When so much is decided by the way you say your allotted 650 words, it makes sense to develop a demanding attitude towards every single word.
Precision, accuracy, and assertiveness are some of the features of powerful writing. The confidence of the writer is charming to the readers because it makes it easy for us to vividly imagine the narrative. Powerful writing leaves no unanswered questions and no unnecessary options. It violently excludes everything that doesn’t matter radically. It makes it seem as if I can neither add nor subtract, and the piece is wholesome as it is.
The power of powerful writing is that it’s able to craft my thinking and as a result my whole life. Powerful thinking is about constantly watching out into the chaotic uncertain and unknown world, yet attempting to find clear coherent explanations. It’s about consolidating the infinite into a very precise word, sentence, paragraph, and narrative.
