#25: Live as if you’re taped
Everyone is watching you
People around me are both always and never watching me. When I have a pimple, I think that every single person notices it. Yet, when I am being rude, I prefer to think nobody saw. From comments from friends about both myself and other people, I saw how selectively attentive people are. I often don’t conceive the extent to which other people are observant of me. My friends are watching not only how I interact with them but also how I interact with other people.
Before I was operating with this idea of “everyone’s living their life and they don’t give a heck about me”. There is a new dimension to that idea: my actions, words, and gestures are constantly silently observed and recorded by those around me. We are all making these observations and judgments because they give us information for acting appropriately as social animals. So I am choosing to think that I am being watched at all times and I am NOT invisible. I cannot hide, because eventually my true nature will shine through in my actions and someone will witness that.
What does that entail? Crafting a very coherent character that I don’t have to control. Everything I say and think, especially these days, is public information. People who notice things about me will share them with other people, which forms my reputation.
