Whiplash, a movie about an obsessed drum player, couldn’t get financed right away so the director made a short film instead. The short is a scene-long articulative distillation of the entire film with most actors, themes, and style established. After winning Sundance in 2013, the project got the needed check. They came back to Sundance in 2014.
$23,000 vs.$3,300,000 budget, 14 vs. 114 script pages. Is this not a powerful slayer of all excuses? I cannot write a book, make a film, or open a business, but I can write a blog, make a short video and launch a singular product. If anything, “the short” is a reliable way to test my own commitment, as well as ensure meaningful upgrades in the future. So whatever it is that I want to create, I ask myself:
